This is the update in the British Columbia Universal Ostrich Farm case. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued an order to KILL nearly 400 HEALTHY ostriches in December 2024, on the fear that they might be infected with the Avian Flu. That was December 2024. Remember that date.
The farm took the “order to kill” to court and got an injunction preventing the implementation of the order to kill pending judicial review. A judicial review of the CFIA’s order was conducted and the day-before-yesterday, a Federal Court judge ratified the CFIA’s order to kill because it was “reasonable” and “based on the evidence available at the time” (paraphrasing slightly).
NONE of the birds are currently sick. NONE have been sick FOR MONTHS. There is NO URGENCY. There is NO BASIS for the kill. The Court has authorized CFIA to implement its order to cull (euphemism for SLAUGHTER) nearly 400 healthy ostriches, some of which have been in the family for over 30 years.
