Dr. Oz joins Canadian Ostrich Farm’s ostriches facing death, offers his 900-acre Florida ranch

New York Post, May 26, 2025

Dr. Mehmet Oz, a prominent TV personality and Trump administration official, has joined efforts to save approximately 400 ostriches facing culling in British Columbia due to avian flu concerns. Partnering with billionaire John Catsimatidis and U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Oz has offered his 900-acre Florida ranch in Okeechobee as a new home for the flock. The Canadian government plans to destroy the birds after detecting the virus in two ostrich carcasses in December, but Oz, Catsimatidis, and Kennedy argue that the remaining birds are likely immune, having survived the outbreak, and should be studied rather than killed.

Kennedy wrote to Canadian officials, urging them to reconsider the culling, emphasizing the potential for the ostriches to provide insights into immune responses to the H5N1 virus, which could benefit future agricultural resilience. Oz, who spoke directly with the ostrich farm owner, confirmed their willingness to relocate the birds to his property. He stressed the importance of scientific evaluation over bureaucratic decisions, drawing parallels to COVID-19 management, and called for testing the birds to assess their immunity rather than proceeding with indiscriminate culling.
