PRESS RELEASE Mar 25, 2025
Edgewood, British Columbia – Universal Ostrich Farms is deeply saddened to announce the tragic and senseless loss of Sarah, one of our beloved elder ostriches. On Friday, March 21, 2025, Sarah, a healthy and cherished member of our herd, was shot and killed on our property.
The RCMP were immediately notified, and we are now awaiting their investigation into the circumstances surrounding this violent act. At this time, we do not know who is responsible for Sarah’s death, but we are fully committed to working with law enforcement to uncover the truth and ensure those responsible are held accountable.
Katie Pasitney, daughter of co-owner Karen Espersen, said “The loss of Sarah is not just a tragedy for our farm, but for everyone who values the safety of animals. We are focused on finding justice and preventing something like this from happening again.”
In addition to the emotional toll, we continue to incur significant legal costs as we work to prevent an unnecessary culling order issued by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). We are incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from our supporters, and we will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available.
