“Culling healthy animals has no moral value whatsoever,” says South African-Canadian protester Segall Farrell, who has been camping at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, BC for many months.
Amid the Canadian government’s commitment to indiscriminately kill all ostriches on the farm—without testing—following an avian flu outbreak earlier this year, Farrell notes that such blanket culling policies were abandoned in South Africa.
He adds that the sick birds died months ago and sees no reason why the government won’t test the remaining flock or allow farmers to do so.
