Secretary Kennedy, May 23, 2025
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recently sent a letter to President Paul MacKinnon of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, expressing deep appreciation for his willingness to meet with senior U.S. health officials. Represented by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the department thanked President MacKinnon and the CFIA for engaging in productive discussions with Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Director of the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Martin A. Makary, Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, and other HHS representatives.
The meeting focused on a potential collaborative project involving the NIH, FDA, and CDC to conduct a long-term study on the British Columbia ostrich flock. The goal of this effort is to expand scientific understanding of the ostriches’ immune response to avian influenza. HHS emphasized its enthusiasm for this promising opportunity for cross-border scientific cooperation, with the shared aim of strengthening efforts to protect both human and animal health.
